Onsite Water Testing of Windows, Doors, Cladding and Facades

Window and Door manufacturers rigorously test their products off site in factory conditions but this does not take into account the many variables associated with the onsite conditions and installation of this joinery.

To establish the test perimeters for onsite testing of windows we follow AS/NZS 4284:2008 and ASTM E1105.

The test procedure involves spraying water at a controlled rate and specific droplet size and distribution pattern, while applying a vacuum to the interior face.  This procedure is the closest imitation of actual site weather conditions and tests not only the joinery but all flashing, seals and the combination of the installation methods.

In recognising these variables the American Aluminium Manufacturers Associations (AAMA) have produced an onsite testing procedure for the certification of joinery installed for less than 6 months entitled AAMA.502.11.

For windows older than 6 months and for forensic testing AAMA have produced a testing specification AAMA 511.08 which we can also follow.

For forensic testing, if water ingress is observed, the location of the leak point of entry is established and if damage has occurred, then establish the fault that has allowed this ingress.
